CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler has now confirmed for TVLine that Season 9′s entire run will, in fact, span the wedding weekend and just the wedding weekend, as the comedy details “how each character, before Ted, meets the mother. So, they each meet her independently before he does.”

“We have this new framework for the season,” said Bays. “The structure is telling a story at the wedding but will flash back and forward, decades will span in course of this one weekend.” Guest stars will include Sherri Shepherd and Wayne Brady, who’ll reprise his role as James but, Harris spilled, “we learn during the wedding that James is getting a divorce so that puts things into little bit of a pickle.” The final season will allow Bays and Thomas to bring back favorite characters from past seasons. “We’re throwing a wedding and everyone’s invited,” said Bays, “so if there’s someone you liked on the show there’s a good chance they’ll be coming back.” There may even be dance and musical elements, and the potential return of Smulders’ Robin Sparkles alter ego, whose pop hit “Let’s Go To The Mall” blasted overhead midway through the panel as the cast and fans sang along. “It’s a wedding,” teased Thomas. “People sing songs at weddings.”
